The year 2006 was a busy year at the German Club. In addition to our many events, both private and public, we published our very popular cookbook, Not All Kraut is Sour. Twenty years later we are celebrating the anniversary of our achievement with a new printing.
Although much has changed in the intervening years, we have not altered the contents. This reprinting of the original is designed to preserve our history and our memories not only for those of us still living, but for generations to come.
By 2010 maintaining the twenty year-old Klub Haus had become impossible as many of our members wanted to retire from the work required to organize fundraising and other events.
We reluctantly reached the decision to sell the building, but we were fortunate that club member Rolf Hesser, owner of Columbia Bakery, purchased the property and made it available to us for our club events for some years.
At present our small group meets once a month for lunch or dinner at one of several local restaurants.

About the author
From the Canadian prairie to war-torn Germany, occupied Poland, and back to Canada, Dorothée Mandy’s journey is marked by a unique tale of both Canadian heritage and immigrant experience. As an adult, Dorothy has lived in a co-operative community, and she played an instrumental role in establishing Haven House, a refuge for battered women and children in Nanaimo, BC. She volunteered at the Sexual Assault Centre and served on the District 68 School Board. Dorothy’s passion for advocating women's rights brought her to represent Alberta Women at the National Action Committee on the Status of Women. She now lives with her longtime partner in British Columbia, where she enjoyed the German Choir and served on the executive of the Canadian Society for German Culture to celebrate the culture and music of her youth. She has found her spiritual community with the Nanaimo Unitarian Fellowship
